A few days ago I was the first person to stop at a red light on a very busy street intersection. I had a good 2 1/2-3 minute wait ahead of me. As did any pedestrians wanting to cross to the other side of the street. What I'm about to share with you, bothers me to my core. So I stop my car at the light and up walks a 40ish year old woman and her 12ish year old son. The woman started to frantically push the button you push when you want to cross the street. So in 15 seconds, when she was still waiting she began her frantic pushing again. And again 20 seconds after that. Each time she did her pushing and realized she still had to wait, she would use all sorts of body language to let the world know she was aggravated to be waiting. This is not the first time I've seen such behavior from people waiting to cross the street. And every time I want to roll down my window and give them a lesson on the whole button-pushy thingy box. So, to get it off my chest, here it is:
I know we all hate to see this when we arrive at a corner:

Now, I've seen some here in California that give a person 30 seconds to cross the street. I've also seen as low as 10. Here's how that works- They figure you are going to take 3.5 steps every 2 seconds. So the bigger the intersection crossing, the more time alotted to you. So to re-cap, you only have to push the button ONCE. Please, if you are the offending party, change your ways. You look silly with all that pushing.

Man, am I embarrased. After I push the button 5 times every 4 seconds, I give up and start giving it kung fu kicks. Hard ones. You mean I can stop doing that??
I'm a pusher. It's just so satisfying, who cares if it works?
Since we're on the subject.....the same rule applies to the elevator....one push is all it takes!!!
While in China [Tibet] to climb mountains, I had the opportunity to investigate this phenomena. At Chinese intersections every light changes has a visible timer. It indicates when the next change is about to happen... So I push the GenyouwTiChingping [cross button] and watch the timer start the count down. Then, with just a second to go I push the GenyouwTiChingping again. A Shou Lin monk appears from a trap door in the street and kung fu kicks his way in my direction, screaming Thi Chig Sow Ling Chupach [push more faster and harder for crossing sooner]. So either my Chinese was a bit off or pushing more makes a Monk pop out of the street....
Jay, I'm left speechless.
Jay, whatever did you just say?
you all right Jay?
I said... While in China we were standing on a busy street corener in Lhasa across from the Potala. That is that wonderful gigantic building that is the home of the Dhali Lama. Trying to figure out the complex timing of the street crossing lights. It seemed random but with some re-occuring pattens. I stopped a local dude and attempted to get information on what button to press to get the instant walk signal. After much arm waving, that resembled kung fu fighting moves, and lots of words lik cmimichonga and ginsu, we left the corner as perplexed as ever...
Ohhhhhhh, I get it now....Kristin, please call me, I'm concerned for Jay.
thanks for the clarification! :)
